Castra Design and Layout, Part II

Castra Plans

Small Castra:

This plan of a castra would be a typical situation when the Roman army would stay in one spot for just one night. It depicts a basic masonry wall with simple barracks for temporary sleeping.

Medium Castra:This castra would be seen when the army would spend more than a night in one spot. This plan shows a more fortified wall with a more detailed interior plan. This type of castra would have a headquarter tent in the middle with barracks and possible granaries near the barracks.

Large Castra:

The larger castra would be a more permanent settlement and would be an evolution of the "medium castra". This would typically have a further evolution to a full city. In this castra the walls are even heavier for more fortification and protection from potential raids and the elements. Also the interior plan is more diverse than any of the other plans. It has more specific buildings such as hospital, tribune house, and legate house. This all means that the army would be staying in this spot of a long period of time, typically over the winter months.
